Kenwood Wildlife Center
Wild Animal Exclusion Service
What is an Exclusion?
If you have unauthorized creatures in your attic, basement, under the deck, etc. the Kenwood Wildlife Center can humanely remove them and the hazards they could present.
How do I know if I have creatures?
If you hear scratching, chewing, tearing, squeaking in the night. This could be caused by squirrels, raccoons, opossum, rats or bats. Bats also leave droppings (guano) at entry sites under eaves or trim board
How are they excluded?
The Kenwood Wildlife Center, interested in wild animal welfare provides the humane exclusion service and is allowed by the California Fish and Game Department to relocate the captured creatures to a similar yet safe area. The creatures are observed to see if there could be babies inside the home and determine how long the home owner will have to wait until they can be either removed or will walk out on their own. If a family of creatures is not present, the individual can be trapped in a variety of humane methods. After the animals are gone, the process of plugging the holes, or repairing the area will begin to ensure that reentry does not occur.
Why is this different than a pest control, exterminator, or other exclusion companies?
The animals are trapped by the other companies and killed. It is the law. Only wildlife rehabilitation organizations have the permit to house animals. Only sick, injured or orphaned animals can be kept at the rehabilitation facilities. All others must be relocated within a few miles of the capture site.
What if there are newborn creatures involved?
The capture must be delayed until the babies are developed enough to walk out (or fly out) on their own. This will be determined by the Exclusion staff person. Otherwise if you plug the hole that the parent is using to go into and out of the structure, there will be dead carcasses of the babies rotting in your home. Also the parent will become even more persistent in its efforts to regain entry to the nursery to care for them.
What are the dangers involved in dealing with errant animals in your home space?
Both skunks and bats are susceptible to rabies. Do not ever touch a bat!! Our exclusion expert has been vaccinated against rabies. Bat guano can also aid in the growth of a lung damaging fungus.
What is the cost for an initial visit?
The fee for a home consultation and inspection is $75.00. The Exclusion service has to cover it's own expenses while giving service to the community. This fee covers the staff person's hourly pay, gas and vehicle expense and administration costs.
What if there is construction work to be done?
The staff member will do the proper work at the rate of $75.00 per hour. This covers the minimum supplies needed to "permanently build out" the wild creatures. Or the home owner may elect to have someone else do the work.
When is the service available?
The appointment is made generally for weekdays. Occasionally, for the convenience of the home owner, consultations can be made on week ends.
